You can directly upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Beta 1 (“Lucid Lynx”) from Ubuntu 9.10 (“Karmic Koala”) or from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (“Hardy Heron”). This page contains instructions for both.
Upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 LTS Beta:
You can easily upgrade over the network with the following procedure.
- Open teminal or press Alt-F2 and type update-manager --devel-release
- Click the Check button to check for new updates.
- If there are any updates to install, use the Install Updates button to install them, and press Check again after that is complete.
- A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.
- Click Upgrade.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
Upgrade from 8.04 LTS to 10.04 LTS Beta
You can easily upgrade over the network with the following procedure.
- Press Alt-F2 and type update-manager --devel-release
- Click the Check button to check for new updates.
- If there are any updates to install, use the Install Updates button to install them, and press Check again after that is complete.
- A message will appear informing you of the availability of the new release.
- Click Upgrade.

Upgrading Using the Alternate CD/DVD
Use this method if the system being upgraded is not connected to the Internet.
- Download the alternate installation CD (PC (Intel x86) alternate install CD or 64-bit PC (AMD64) alternate install CD)
- Burn the ISO to a CD and insert it into the CD-ROM drive of the computer to be upgraded.
- If the ISO file is on the computer to be upgraded, you could avoid wasting a CD by mounting the ISO as a drive with a command like:
sudo mount -o loop ~/Desktop/ubuntu-10.04-beta1-alternate-i386.iso /media/cdrom0
- If the ISO file is on the computer to be upgraded, you could avoid wasting a CD by mounting the ISO as a drive with a command like:
- A dialog will be displayed offering you the opportunity to upgrade using that CD.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the upgrade dialog is not displayed for any reason, you may also run the following command using Alt+F2:
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

Just a note. Upgrading from 8.04 to 10.04 was only showing 8.10as the upgrade. I worked out that under administration-software sources under the updates tab, at the bottom option was set to “Normal releases”
Resetting it to “Long term support releases only” and running the command then showed the 10.04 option.

Yup, that’s true, because, if the option is “Normal Release” only, it will search for upgrade to the next version after, it means upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 to 9.04 etc. So if s.o. wants to use LTS only, the upgrade must remain Long term support, anh then he will be able to upgrade only when the new LTS version is out
